Popular wine regions in Germany
Germany's vineyards sit along its rivers, where the water and the slopes help grapes ripen this far north. These are the regions our wineries call home.
Franconia
Franconia, in northern Bavaria along the river Main, is the home of Silvaner: dry, earthy and mineral, with a quiet depth that suits food. The village of Castell claims Germany's first Silvaner, planted in 1659, and the region also grows fine Riesling, Bacchus, Scheurebe and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Explore Castell, one of Germany's oldest wine estates, from everyday Gutswein to Grosses Gewächs from the Schlossberg and a rare Silvaner icewine.
Pfalz
The Pfalz is one of Germany's warmest and sunniest wine regions, sheltered by the Haardt mountains. Its wines are riper and rounder, from juicy Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Discover Nett (Bergdolt-Reif & Nett), whose range includes a full line of alcohol-free wines.
Mosel
The Mosel winds through some of the steepest vineyards in the world, on slate that warms the vines and gives the wines their stony, mineral edge. This is classic Riesling country: light, fragrant and lively, from off-dry feinherb to dry Grosses Gewächs from famous sites such as the Trittenheimer Apotheke and the Laurentiuslay. Shop Weingut Josef Rosch in Leiwen.
German wine taste profile
The Mosel is the lightest and most delicate: Mosel Riesling is low in alcohol, bright with acidity and often has a touch of sweetness to balance it.
Franconia is drier and more earthy. Franconia Silvaner is herbal and mineral, and its Rieslings and Pinot Noirs are firm and food friendly.
The Pfalz is warmer, so the wines are fuller and riper. Pfalz whites have more fruit and body, and the reds are softer.
Across the country, German wines share fresh acidity and moderate alcohol, which makes them some of the easiest wines to pair with food.
Buying German wine in Singapore
German whites are made for Singapore's food and climate. Here is where to start.
- Spicy dishes, from laksa to Sichuan: off-dry Riesling (look for feinherb)
- Seafood, sushi and steamed fish: Silvaner or a dry Mosel Riesling
- Roast duck and pork: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir)
- Celebrations: Castell's sparkling wines, or the alcohol-free range from Nett for guests who are not drinking
Every bottle is delivered across Singapore. Use the filters above to narrow the list by region, grape, price, body and sweetness.
