Weingut Josef Rosch (Leiwen, Mosel, Germany)

For Hannes, Josef Rosch is a particularly personal discovery. During a tour along the Mosel in 2021, he met Werner Rosch, the senior generation of the family, and had the opportunity to taste his wines and learn more about the vineyards around Leiwen. The wines immediately stood out for their combination of purity, minerality and remarkable value for money – a combination that is not always easy to find among the Mosel's better-known estates.

The Rosch family has been making wine in Leiwen for more than 200 years, with the winery now being run by the younger generation, Nico and Nicola Rosch, who took over in 2021.

The estate is devoted entirely to Riesling, grown in steep Mosel vineyards on slate soils. Among its important sites are Leiwener Laurentiuslay, Trittenheimer Apotheke, Dhroner Hofberg, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Klüsserather Bruderschaft and Leiwener Klostergarten. The combination of steep slopes, exposed slate and the cool Mosel climate gives the wines their characteristic freshness, fine acidity and mineral character.

Rosch's philosophy is firmly rooted in the vineyard. As the family puts it, the wines are made outside, not in the cellar: most of the effort goes into the vineyards, while the cellar intervention remains deliberately restrained. The Rieslings are spontaneously fermented and vegan, allowing the individual vineyard characters to come through naturally. The result is a style that Hannes particularly enjoys: slender, elegant and highly mineral Rieslings with plenty of character and excellent drinkability. They are wines that show the classic Mosel combination of ripe fruit, lively acidity and slate-driven minerality without becoming heavy or overly sweet.

For us, Josef Rosch is also a good example of what we look for at WineProvisionShop: a family winery with genuine vineyard character, traditional roots and wines that offer exceptional quality without the price tag of the most famous Mosel names.
