Carlo Giacosa (Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy)

Nestled in the heart of the prestigious Barbaresco DOCG appellation, Azienda Agricola Carlo Giacosa is one of Piedmont's finest family-owned wineries, dedicated to producing elegant, terroir-driven wines that showcase the extraordinary character of Nebbiolo. For four generations, the Giacosa family has cultivated vineyards surrounding the village of Barbaresco, neighbouring some of Italy's most celebrated estates, including the legendary Gaja. Today, the estate remains firmly in family hands, combining traditional craftsmanship with meticulous vineyard management to produce wines renowned for their purity, balance and remarkable ageing potential.

The family's winemaking roots date back to the 1950s, when they farmed a modest holding in Barbaresco, producing wine primarily for family, friends and the local community while selling surplus wine in traditional demijohns. Their commitment to quality and their pioneering spirit soon became evident. In the late 1950s, Donato Giacosa joined forces with Don Fiorino Marengo and nineteen local growers to establish the Produttori del Barbaresco, a cooperative that would later become one of the world's most respected producers of Barbaresco.

The defining chapter of the family estate began with Carlo Giacosa. Originally destined for a career in the Italian Air Force, Carlo returned home following his brother's illness to help his family in the vineyards. After gaining invaluable experience as cellar master at the newly established cooperative, he and his wife Carla embarked on the ambitious task of creating their own winery. By the mid-1960s, the family had ceased selling Nebbiolo to the cooperative and released their first Barbaresco under the Carlo Giacosa label, marking the beginning of an estate that would earn an outstanding reputation both in Italy and internationally.

Throughout the following decades, Carlo established himself as one of the region's most respected traditionalists while embracing carefully considered innovations. Following the Italian wine industry's methanol crisis during the 1980s, he became an early advocate of lower vineyard yields, meticulous green harvesting and the production of single-vineyard (cru) Barbarescos that faithfully expressed their individual terroirs. The outstanding 1997 vintage confirmed the success of this philosophy and cemented the estate's reputation for producing wines of exceptional concentration, elegance and longevity.

Today, the winery is led by the fourth generation of the Giacosa family. Maria Grazia Giacosa has guided the estate since 2006, successfully combining the family's long-standing traditions with modern precision, while her son Luca joined the winery in 2012 after completing his studies, ensuring that Carlo's philosophy and uncompromising standards continue into the future.

The estate's primary focus remains Nebbiolo, producing elegant Barbaresco DOCG from carefully selected vineyards, complemented by classic Piedmontese varieties including Barbera, Dolcetto, and Langhe Nebbiolo, as well as small quantities of Pinot Nero. The wines are characterised by remarkable finesse rather than power—displaying the hallmark aromas of rose petals, red cherries, wild berries, liquorice and tar that have made Barbaresco one of the world's great wines.

For Wine Provision Shop, Carlo Giacosa represents much more than an outstanding producer. Dr. Hannes Hentze first visited the estate in 1996 when he was a student in Konstanz, and has maintained a close friendship with the Giacosa family.

Today, Carlo Giacosa continues to produce wines that epitomise the timeless elegance of Barbaresco, wines that are unmistakably traditional, beautifully balanced and capable of rewarding patient cellaring for decades.
