Carlo Giacosa – Langhe Pinot Nero 2019

Carlo Giacosa Langhe Pinot Nero 2019 is an elegant Piedmontese interpretation of Pinot Noir, produced from 100% Pinot Nero in the Langhe hills around Barbaresco. Rather than imitating Burgundy, the wine reflects the cooler aspects of the Langhe terroir, combining Pinot Nero’s naturally delicate fruit and floral character with the freshness and structure of northern Piedmont. Carlo Giacosa includes Langhe Pinot Nero among its core estate wines, alongside its Barbaresco and traditional Piedmontese varieties.

The 2019 shows a bright, expressive bouquet of cherry and morello cherry, with layers of red berries, delicate spice and subtle vanilla. On the palate it is dry, rounded and surprisingly full for Pinot Nero, with juicy red fruit, moderate acidity and fine, supple tannins. The combination of ripe fruit and gentle oak gives the wine a smooth, creamy texture, while the underlying freshness prevents it from becoming heavy. Tasting notes for the 2019 specifically highlight its intense ruby colour, red-fruit character, spicy nuances, good structure and persistent finish.

The wine is deliberately made in a style that balances Pinot Nero’s aromatic delicacy with the richer, more structured character of Piedmont. At around 13% alcohol, it remains relatively restrained, allowing the red-fruit and floral profile to dominate rather than relying on extraction or high alcohol. The 2019 has already developed beyond its youthful primary fruit, but retains sufficient freshness and structure for further bottle evolution.

Now around seven years from vintage, the 2019 should be drinking very well, with the youthful cherry and berry fruit beginning to acquire more savoury and earthy complexity. It is not a wine that needs decades of ageing, but should comfortably develop over the next 3–5 years if well stored. An elegant and versatile northern Italian Pinot Nero, particularly well suited to roast poultry, veal, pork, mushrooms, game birds, charcuterie and moderately aged cheeses.
