Carlo Giacosa – Langhe Nebbiolo 2019

Carlo Giacosa Langhe Nebbiolo 2019 is an elegant and traditionally styled Piedmontese red, made from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the estate’s own vineyards immediately surrounding the winery in Barbaresco. The vines are planted at approximately 220–260 metres elevation on compact limestone- and clay-rich soils, giving the wine the freshness, mineral character and aromatic finesse associated with Nebbiolo from the Langhe.

The 2019 displays a bright ruby-garnet colour and an expressive bouquet of raspberry, redcurrant and red cherry, with delicate nuances of dried violet, rose and subtle spice. On the palate it is dry, fresh and surprisingly structured for a Langhe Nebbiolo, combining juicy red fruit with vibrant acidity, fine-grained tannins and a distinctly mineral, savoury backbone. A professional tasting of the 2019 highlighted its bright fruit, dried-violet character, natural freshness and fine, silky texture.

Following destemming and fermentation on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, the wine is transferred to large oak barrels for maturation, followed by further bottle ageing in the estate cellar. This traditional approach gives the wine additional texture and complexity without imposing a heavy oak character, allowing the aromatic personality of Nebbiolo to remain at the centre.

At around seven years from vintage, the 2019 should now be drinking beautifully, with its youthful raspberry and redcurrant fruit beginning to develop more savoury notes of dried flowers, liquorice, herbs and subtle earthiness. It is more approachable than a Barbaresco or Barolo, but retains enough acidity, tannin and mineral structure for further development over the next 3–5 years if well stored. A particularly elegant and versatile Piedmontese red, excellent with Piedmontese antipasti, stuffed pasta, veal, roasted poultry, mushrooms, light game and medium-aged cheeses.
