Carlo Giacosa – Barbaresco NARIN 2017
Carlo Giacosa Barbaresco NARIN 2017 is an elegant yet firmly structured expression of Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, produced from a selection of grapes grown in the prestigious Asili, Cole and Ovello crus. The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and matured for 18 months in a combination of smaller oak barrels and 20-hectolitre French-oak casks, followed by a further four months in stainless steel. At 14.5% alcohol, it combines ripe fruit and warmth with the freshness and tannic structure characteristic of Barbaresco.
The 2017 displays a deep garnet colour and an expansive, complex bouquet, with expressive notes of ripe cherry, red berries and strawberry, complemented by rose petal and violet, and increasingly savoury nuances of liquorice, cinnamon, leather and earthy spice. On the palate it is dry, full-bodied and beautifully structured, with vibrant acidity, concentrated fruit and a fine but pronounced tannic framework. The combination of ripe fruit, spice and savoury depth gives the wine considerable length and persistence.
The 2017 vintage has now reached an interesting stage of development. At almost nine years old, the youthful red fruit should be beginning to give way to the more complex tertiary character that makes mature Nebbiolo so compelling: dried flowers, tobacco, leather, earth and balsamic spice, while the underlying acidity and tannins should still provide considerable energy. Carlo Giacosa's Narin also has a proven track record, with the 2016 vintage receiving 92 points from Wine Spectator.
NARIN 2017 is therefore a serious, traditional and age-worthy Barbaresco, offering considerably more structure than its relatively elegant aromatic profile initially suggests. It should be particularly rewarding now, although a further 5–8 years of bottle development should bring additional tertiary complexity if the bottle has been well stored. A classic partner for truffles, braised and roasted red meats, game, Piedmontese pasta dishes and mature cheeses.
