Antonelli San Marco (Umbria, Italy)

Antonelli San Marco is one of Umbria's most respected family-owned wine estates, situated in the heart of the prestigious Montefalco DOCG appellation. The estate extends across approximately 170 hectares, including around 60 hectares of organically certified vineyards, together with olive groves, woodland and farmland, creating a rich and biodiverse agricultural landscape. The Antonelli family has owned the estate since 1881 (officially acquired in 1883), and for more than a century has been dedicated to producing wines that faithfully express the unique character of Montefalco while preserving the region's cultural and environmental heritage.
Quality, authenticity and elegance define the Antonelli philosophy. Continuous research and meticulous vineyard management are combined with a restrained, traditional approach to winemaking that favours balance, freshness and longevity over sheer power. The modern gravity-flow winery allows grapes and must to move naturally without pumping, minimising mechanical stress and preserving the delicate skins and phenolic compounds. This gentle vinification is particularly important for Sagrantino, one of the world's most tannic grape varieties, enabling the production of wines with remarkable structure, purity and finesse.
Antonelli is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, the indigenous grape that has become the symbol of Umbria. Although still relatively undiscovered outside Italy, Sagrantino deserves comparison with the country's greatest age-worthy wines, such as Barolo and Barbaresco. The variety produces deeply coloured wines with extraordinary concentration, firm yet refined tannins and exceptional ageing potential, often evolving gracefully for 20 years or more. Aromas of black cherry, plum, blackberry, wild herbs, oriental spices, cocoa and earthy notes develop into remarkable complexity with bottle age.
Alongside Sagrantino, the estate cultivates other traditional Umbrian varieties including Sangiovese, Grechetto and Trebbiano Spoletino, producing a portfolio that consistently reflects the elegance and authenticity of the Montefalco terroir. Long recognised for its outstanding quality, Antonelli has received numerous accolades, including repeated Tre Bicchieri awards from Gambero Rosso, Slow Wine recognition and consistently outstanding reviews from leading Italian wine critics. In 2026, the estate was honoured with Gambero Rosso's prestigious Award for Sustainable Viticulture, recognising its longstanding commitment to certified organic farming, biodiversity and environmentally responsible wine production.
As Andreas März, editor-in-chief of the renowned Italian wine magazine Merum, aptly observed when reviewing the wines of Montefalco: "There is no second wine of this kind. Next to a Sagrantino, any Super Tuscan fades. This colour, this concentration, this unique load of tannin—no other grape variety has this. To drink a glass of Sagrantino means to fully concentrate on the wine; this wine demands 100% attention." Few estates embody this extraordinary grape and the spirit of Montefalco more convincingly than Antonelli San Marco.
