Majnoni Guicciardini (Tuscany, Italy)

Nestled in the picturesque Val d'Elsa between Florence and the medieval towers of San Gimignano, Fattoria Majnoni Guicciardini is a historic Tuscan estate where over 150 years of family stewardship have been dedicated to producing authentic wines while preserving one of Tuscany's most beautiful cultural landscapes. Covering approximately 200 hectares, the estate is far more than a winery—it is a diversified organic farm comprising vineyards, olive groves, woodland, cereal fields and natural habitats that together reflect the traditional mosaic of the Tuscan countryside. Since 1871, the estate has belonged to the Majnoni Guicciardini family, who continue to balance centuries-old agricultural traditions with a forward-looking commitment to sustainability.

Although vineyards occupy only around 14% of the estate, they represent the heart of the farm and receive the majority of its annual attention. The gently rolling hills, characterised by clay and sandy soils, provide ideal conditions for cultivating Sangiovese, together with traditional Tuscan companion varieties including Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Foglia Tonda, Ciliegiolo, Abrustine and Pugnitello. Rather than following the international trend towards Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the family has consciously chosen to preserve Tuscany's indigenous grape heritage, believing that these native varieties best express the character of their land. Chardonnay is the only international variety cultivated, complementing Tuscan Malvasia in the production of the estate's distinctive white wine, Sparèto.

The estate's philosophy centres on producing elegant, balanced wines through meticulous vineyard work rather than intervention in the cellar. Since the mid-1980s, quality has steadily replaced quantity as the principal objective, with lower yields, selective harvesting and careful clonal selection of Sangiovese significantly raising the standard of production. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand over several passes through the vineyards, allowing each parcel to be picked at its optimal stage of ripeness. Fermentation takes place separately for each vineyard and grape variety, enabling every component to develop its own character before the final blends are assembled. The more structured wines mature gently in large French oak barrels, used primarily to support the natural evolution of the wines rather than to impart dominant oak flavours. Historic underground cellars dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries provide naturally cool, stable conditions for ageing, beautifully combining tradition with modern winemaking technology.

Environmental stewardship has become a defining characteristic of the estate. Organic farming practices were introduced in 2000, and today the family goes well beyond organic certification by incorporating biodynamic and regenerative agricultural principles aimed at improving soil health, biodiversity and long-term sustainability. The estate has established lakes, planted new woodland and native hedgerows, promotes pollinator habitats and actively participates in the Chianti Biodistrict, the Tuscan Organic Producers Association (CTPB) and the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers (FIVI). Spontaneous fermentations, minimal intervention in the cellar and a holistic approach to farming ensure that every bottle reflects both the health of the vineyard and the identity of the terroir.

Today the estate is managed by Pietro Majnoni, together with the next generation represented by his son Cesare, who has brought international winemaking experience while remaining faithful to the family's philosophy. Their wines embody a style that is unmistakably Tuscan—elegant, food-friendly and authentic rather than powerful or heavily extracted. Produced from organically farmed vineyards and rooted firmly in local tradition, the wines of Fattoria Majnoni Guicciardini are a beautiful expression of one of Tuscany's most historic agricultural landscapes, where respect for nature and respect for history continue to go hand in hand.
