Tezza – Amarone della Valpolicella VALPANTENA Riserva BROLO DELLE GIARE MAGNUM 1.5 L 2013
95 Points Decanter GOLD MEDAL – 94 Points Falstaff! Magnificent, Powerful Amarone Riserva 2013 in Rare 1.5 L MAGNUM – Now at Its Prime Drinking Age!
Tezza Amarone della Valpolicella VALPANTENA Riserva BROLO DELLE GIARE 2013 is an exceptional, powerful and magnificently structured Amarone Riserva from the prestigious Valpantena valley, north of Verona in Italy's Veneto region. Produced by the family-owned Tezza winery, this is one of the estate's flagship wines, crafted from carefully selected Corvina, Rondinella and Oseleta grapes and presented here in the impressive 1.5-litre MAGNUM format.
This is Amarone at its most luxurious: full-bodied, muscular, intensely concentrated and extraordinarily complex, yet balanced by remarkable freshness, velvety tannins and an exceptionally long finish. At 16.5% alcohol, BROLO DELLE GIARE is a serious, commanding red wine, made for special occasions, substantial food and lovers of powerful Italian reds.
The grapes are grown on calcareous soils rich in organic matter, potassium, calcium and magnesium, providing the foundation for the wine's concentration and structure. Following harvest, only the finest bunches are selected and subjected to the traditional appassimento process, in which the grapes are slowly dried in temperature- and humidity-controlled drying rooms. This concentrates their natural sugars, flavours and aromatic compounds before fermentation.
The wine subsequently undergoes an extended 72-month maturation period in the winery's cellars, allowing its powerful fruit, tannins and complex secondary aromas to develop remarkable harmony and depth.
The 2013 displays an intense, deep garnet-ruby colour and an extraordinarily rich bouquet of black cherries preserved in alcohol, ripe plums, dried figs, blackcurrants and concentrated forest berries. These are complemented by sophisticated notes of dark chocolate, graphite, cinnamon, dried porcini mushrooms, tobacco, liquorice and sweet spices, with intriguing herbal nuances of thyme and rosemary.
On the palate, it is immensely full-bodied, dense and powerful, with layers of dark fruit, dried cherries, chocolate, spice and savoury complexity. Its firm but velvety tannins provide impressive structure, while the wine's surprising freshness balances its considerable richness and alcohol. The finish is exceptionally long, persistent and beautifully complex.

Now at Its Prime – And in MAGNUM Format!
At thirteen years old in 2026, this magnificent 2013 Amarone Riserva is entering an especially rewarding stage of maturity. Its youthful concentration and muscular tannic structure should now be developing the extraordinary complexity associated with mature, high-quality Amarone: dried cherries, figs, raisins, dark chocolate, tobacco, leather, forest floor, balsamic herbs and exotic spices.
The 2013 vintage is particularly interesting for Amarone. A relatively cool summer followed by a favourable autumn produced wines combining excellent aromatic complexity, freshness and finesse, rather than relying exclusively on power and concentration.
And there is another important advantage: the 1.5 L MAGNUM bottle!
Magnums generally allow wine to mature more slowly than standard 750 ml bottles, owing partly to their lower oxygen-to-wine ratio. This can help preserve freshness and fruit while allowing complex tertiary aromas to develop gradually.
Consequently, a properly stored MAGNUM of BROLO DELLE GIARE 2013 may offer an especially attractive balance between mature complexity, powerful structure and remarkable vitality.
This is a magnificent, masculine-style Amarone Riserva – powerful, sophisticated and wonderfully age-worthy. It should be exceptionally rewarding to enjoy now, while the magnum format and substantial structure suggest potential for further evolution over another 8–12 years, possibly longer under excellent storage conditions.
An outstanding wine for a special celebration, a memorable dinner or simply an evening devoted to appreciating one of Italy's greatest red-wine styles.
Colour
Deep, concentrated garnet-ruby red with mature reflections.
Food Pairing
A magnificent partner for substantial, richly flavoured dishes! Exceptional with slow-braised beef, roast lamb, venison, wild boar, grilled ribeye steak, beef short ribs and other game dishes.
Also wonderful with Risotto all'Amarone, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, mature Pecorino, Gorgonzola and rich mushroom dishes.
Its extraordinary depth and complexity also make it a wonderful meditation wine – to be enjoyed slowly on its own after dinner.
Serving Temperature
16–18°C, ideally around 17°C.
Allow the wine to breathe gently before serving. Decanting may help reveal its complex aromas, although an older magnum should be handled carefully to avoid excessive aeration.
