The vineyard lies at approximately \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e270–400 metres elevation with a south-eastern exposure\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, on distinctive tufaceous soils containing layers of red earth, sand and clay over a rocky, consolidated substrate. This combination gives the wine the characteristic combination of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003edark fruit, mineral depth, freshness and firm structure\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e associated with the Monforte side of Barolo.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe 2015 shows a \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003ecomplex and increasingly mature bouquet of ripe cherry, red and blue berries, violet and liquorice\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, complemented by \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003emint, tobacco, sweet spices and subtle mineral and earthy nuances\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. On the palate it is \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003edry, full-bodied and firmly structured\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, with excellent concentration, vibrant acidity and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003eripe, grainy tannins\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e that provide considerable length. A tasting of the 2015 noted cranberry fruit, savoury spice and juicy tannins, while other assessments highlight the wine's darker blue-fruit character, mint and tobacco.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe wine is produced with a particularly \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003etraditional, extended maceration of four to seven weeks\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e24 months in large Slavonian-oak barrels\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. It then spends another \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e4–6 months in stainless steel and at least six months in bottle\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e before release. The large-format oak is deliberately restrained, allowing the Nebbiolo and Perno terroir to remain at the centre while the extended élevage softens the substantial tannic framework.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e2015 is now entering an excellent drinking window\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, but this is not a Barolo that should be considered over the hill. Its firm tannins and acidity give it substantial longevity; Wine Spectator's assessment suggested drinking from \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e2023 through 2039\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, while another tasting specifically recommended waiting beyond 2026. At around eleven years from vintage, it should be developing increasingly complex notes of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003edried flowers, leather, tobacco, underbrush and balsamic spice\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, while retaining its dark-fruit core.
