Sordo Giovanni – Barolo MONVIGLIERO 2015

Sordo Giovanni Barolo MONVIGLIERO 2015 is a refined and highly distinctive expression of Nebbiolo from the celebrated Monvigliero cru in Verduno, one of the northernmost and most prestigious sites of the Barolo appellation. Made from 100% Nebbiolo, the vineyard is famously exposed to the midday sun, while its terroir and elevated position favour a particularly fragrant and elegant style of Barolo. Sordo’s traditional approach allows the character of the cru to remain at the forefront, rather than relying on new oak or excessive extraction.

The 2015 shows a bright ruby-to-garnet colour and an unusually lifted bouquet, with expressive notes of ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, rosehip and fresh cherry, complemented by dried rose, sweet spices, toasted hazelnut and subtle alpine-herbal nuances. With bottle age, more savoury notes of forest floor, tobacco, liquorice and dried flowers are beginning to emerge. On the palate it is dry, juicy and remarkably elegant, combining concentrated red fruit with vibrant acidity and fine but persistent tannins. The wine is powerful without heaviness, with an almost filigree quality and an impressively long finish; Falstaff awarded the 2015 94 points, specifically highlighting its balance and combination of power and delicacy.

The wine follows Sordo’s traditional long maceration and large-format oak élevage, with maturation in large wooden barrels rather than heavily toasted small barrels. This restrained approach preserves Nebbiolo’s floral and mineral character while allowing the tannins to integrate gradually. The 2015 carries 14.5% alcohol, providing warmth and concentration without overwhelming its freshness.

MONVIGLIERO 2015 is now entering a particularly attractive phase. Recent tastings have found the wine showing cherry, raspberry, dried flowers, leather, earth, truffle, smoke and laurel, with acidity and tannins still very much alive. It is therefore ready to drink now, but by no means over the hill; a further 5–8 years should bring increasing tertiary complexity if properly stored. A beautifully balanced, aromatic and elegant Barolo, particularly compelling with truffles, braised veal or beef, game, mushrooms, rich Piedmontese pasta and mature cheeses.
