Romagnoli – Lacrima di Morro d’Alba BARBAROSSO 2019

Romagnoli BARBAROSSO 2019 is a pure and highly aromatic expression of Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, one of the Marche’s rare indigenous red varieties, produced in the hills around Morro d’Alba in the Castelli di Jesi area. The grapes come from vineyards at approximately 190–250 metres elevation, planted on predominantly clay soils with a significant sandy component. The wine is named in reference to Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who, according to local tradition, encountered and appreciated Lacrima during the siege of Ancona in 1167.

The 2019 is defined above all by its extraordinary floral perfume, with expressive notes of violet, rose petals and lavender, followed by ripe red cherries, wild berries and dark berry fruit. Subtle nuances of cinnamon, nutmeg and delicate spice add complexity without obscuring the wine’s remarkably fragrant character. On the palate it is dry, light to medium-bodied and juicy, with fresh acidity, soft tannins and a clean, pleasantly savoury finish. The combination of intense aromatics and relatively restrained structure makes it an unusually easy-drinking red, despite its distinctive personality.

The grapes are harvested manually and fermented at controlled temperature in stainless-steel tanks, with the wine subsequently matured in steel rather than oak. This simple, non-invasive élevage is particularly well suited to Lacrima: there is no heavy wood influence to mask the grape’s remarkable floral and spicy character. The 2019 carries 13.5% alcohol, reinforcing its fresh, approachable style.

BARBAROSSO 2019 is therefore best understood as the pure, accessible and aromatic counterpart to Romagnoli’s richer MIRUMMUNDI. Rather than aiming for concentration or long ageing, it celebrates Lacrima’s extraordinary perfume and supple texture. A fascinating and highly versatile Marche red, it is particularly good with charcuterie, antipasti, pasta, poultry and grilled meats, and is especially successful with Chinese and other aromatic Asian cuisine, where its floral character complements rather than overwhelms the food.
