Luca Ferraris – Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato CLÀSIC 2018

Luca Ferraris CLÀSIC 2018 is a classic and highly aromatic expression of Ruchè, the rare indigenous red grape of Castagnole Monferrato in Piedmont. It represents Ferraris Agricola’s signature interpretation of Ruchè, produced by blending grapes from five different vineyard areas within the seven communes authorised for the DOCG. This approach gives the wine greater consistency from vintage to vintage while capturing the different soils and microclimates of the appellation.

The 2018 displays the unmistakable perfume of Ruchè, with expressive rose petals and violets complemented by ripe cherry, raspberry and red berries. Subtle notes of blackberry, plum, pepper, mint and sweet spice add depth, while the wine’s characteristic floral fragrance gradually develops more savoury and balsamic nuances with bottle age. On the palate it is dry, fresh and pleasantly rounded, with juicy fruit, lively acidity and a delicate, supple tannic structure.

Compared with Ferraris’ more ambitious Vigna del Parroco and Opera Prima, CLÀSIC is deliberately the more approachable and immediately expressive wine. Its appeal lies in the remarkable combination of floral perfume, spicy character, freshness and easy drinkability, making it one of the most accessible ways to discover the personality of Ruchè. The 2018 is now at an attractive stage of maturity, with the youthful floral intensity beginning to give way to greater complexity while retaining its characteristic freshness.

A wonderfully individual Piedmontese red for everyday gastronomy, CLÀSIC works particularly well with salumi, antipasti, pasta, grilled meats, poultry and moderately aged cheeses. Its aromatic character also makes it an intriguing partner for mildly spicy dishes, while its relatively supple tannins mean it can be enjoyed without the long decanting normally required by more structured Piedmontese reds.
