Luca Ferraris – Barbera d’Asti Superiore VITI CENTENARI 2020

Luca Ferraris VITI CENTENARI 2020 is a powerful and highly individual Barbera d’Asti Superiore from the Colli Astiani, made from 100% Barbera grown on exceptionally old vines planted in 1916 at the Cà Mongròss estate in Montegrosso d’Asti. These centenarian vines naturally produce small, loose bunches and very low yields, resulting in unusually concentrated fruit. From 2020 onwards, the wine carries the Colli Astiani geographical designation, highlighting the specific terroir behind this flagship Barbera.

The 2020 shows an intense and deeply coloured profile, with aromas of ripe black cherry, plum preserve and dark berries, complemented by dried rose, violet, liquorice, mint and balsamic nuances. Subtle notes of toast, vanilla, clove and sweet spice emerge from the oak maturation. On the palate it is full-bodied, rich and remarkably concentrated, with juicy dark fruit balanced by Barbera’s naturally vibrant acidity. The tannins are rounded and polished rather than aggressive, giving the wine a powerful yet surprisingly elegant texture and a long, savoury finish. A blind tasting by Wine Enthusiast similarly found the 2020 deeply extracted, with dark berries, marjoram, mint and liquorice, followed by black cherry and plum, with round tannins and balanced acidity.

The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and extended maturation in 500-litre French-oak tonneaux, followed by bottle refinement. The large-format oak provides texture and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the concentrated fruit of the old vines. At around 16% alcohol, the 2020 is unapologetically powerful, but its acidity provides the freshness needed to keep the wine balanced rather than heavy.

VITI CENTENARI 2020 is therefore far removed from a simple, youthful Barbera: it is a serious, concentrated and age-worthy Piedmontese red, combining the grape's trademark acidity with the depth and density that only exceptionally old vines can provide. With a suggested ageing potential of 10–15 years or more, the 2020 should develop increasing notes of dried flowers, tobacco, balsamic herbs, leather and spice while retaining its dark-fruit core. A superb partner for braised and roasted meats, game, rich Piedmontese dishes, truffles and medium- to strongly aged cheeses.
