La Torre – Rosso di Montalcino AMPELIO 2020
A small "Supertuscan" made from 100% Sangiovese grapes in the best vineyards
La Torre – Rosso di Montalcino 2020
La Torre Rosso di Montalcino 2020 is an organic, traditionally styled Tuscan red from Sant’Angelo in Colle, in the southern part of the Montalcino appellation. Made from Sangiovese, it expresses the estate’s preference for purity, freshness and restrained winemaking rather than extraction or heavy oak. The vineyards lie on the estate’s stony, calcareous soils at relatively high elevation, contributing to the wine’s characteristic aromatic lift and freshness.
The 2020 shows an appealingly pure and fragrant profile of cherry, sour plum and red berries, with subtle hints of violet, dried herbs and spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied, silky and energetic, with juicy Sangiovese fruit, lively acidity and youthful but pleasantly fine tannins. There is a delicate savoury character beneath the fruit, while the finish is fresh and gently rounded, with a touch of cherry sweetness.
A graceful and highly food-friendly expression of Montalcino, this is deliberately less powerful and structured than La Torre’s Brunello, offering immediate drinking pleasure while retaining the savoury complexity of the estate. It is particularly well suited to Tuscan pasta, pizza, grilled meats, charcuterie and hard cheeses. The 2020 is already drinking beautifully, but its balance and tannic structure should allow several additional years of bottle development.
