La Torre – Brunello di Montalcino LA TORRE 2018
La Torre Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a traditional, elegant expression of southern Montalcino, produced from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown on south-facing slopes near Sant’Angelo in Colle at around 420 metres elevation. The estate’s small vineyards lie on calcareous, schist-rich soils, and the wine is matured predominantly in large oak barrels, with only very limited use of barrique, allowing the character of Sangiovese and the Montalcino terroir to remain at the forefront.
The 2018 shows a beautifully aromatic and savoury nose, with ripe red and black cherries, wild berries, violet, dried rose, tobacco, cedar and subtle Mediterranean herbs, alongside earthy and mineral nuances. On the palate it is concentrated yet remarkably linear, with juicy red-fruit character, vibrant acidity and fine-grained, tightly woven tannins providing structure without heaviness. Subtle oak, tobacco and sandalwood notes add complexity, while a savoury, mineral and gently balsamic finish gives the wine impressive persistence.
A refined, traditionally styled Brunello rather than an overly powerful or heavily oaked interpretation, the 2018 combines freshness, precision and depth. Its firm but polished tannic structure suggests considerable ageing potential, with one specialist assessment giving a drinking window of 2027–2036. At this stage, decanting should help reveal its floral, earthy and savoury complexity, while further bottle age will bring greater tertiary character and integration.
