Il Rio – Pinot Nero VENTISEI 2018
Il Rio VENTISEI 2018 is a distinctive Tuscan Pinot Nero from the hills of Mugello, produced by the small estate of Paolo Cerrini in Vicchio, north of Florence. Made from 100% Pinot Nero, the wine reflects the area’s relatively cool climate and predominantly clay soils, conditions that help preserve aromatic intensity and freshness in a grape variety more commonly associated with Burgundy. The estate uses a partially carbonic maceration, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation and malolactic fermentation in barrique.
The 2018 displays an elegant yet surprisingly generous profile of ripe red cherries and red berries, complemented by sweet spices, balsamic nuances and subtle earthy, cocoa and smoky notes. On the palate it is dry, juicy and beautifully balanced, combining ripe fruit with lively acidity and a supple, well-integrated tannic structure. The fruit has considerable depth without becoming heavy, while the combination of spice, freshness and balsamic character gives the wine a distinctly savoury and persistent finish.
The wine undergoes 12 months of maturation in barriques, followed by extended refinement in cement and bottle, allowing the oak to integrate while preserving the freshness and aromatic precision of the Pinot Nero. The 2018 is therefore an intriguing alternative to more conventional Tuscan reds: silky, aromatic and refined, yet with enough structure and savoury complexity to reward bottle age. It is particularly well suited to roast poultry, game birds, pork, mushrooms, charcuterie and earthy pasta dishes.
