Filippo Gallino – Rosato Le Due Rose 2019

Filippo Gallino Le Due Rose 2019 is a distinctive Piedmontese rosato made from 100% Nebbiolo, produced by the historic family-owned Filippo Gallino winery in Canale, in the Roero region of Piedmont. The name Le Due Rose (“The Two Roses”) is a personal tribute from winemaker and owner Gianni Gallino to his sisters, Laura and Enrica. First bottled by the estate in the late 1980s, it is a rosé with considerably more character and structure than the light, purely fruit-driven style often associated with rosé.

The grapes come from the sandy, calcareous-clay soils of the Roero, on the left bank of the Tanaro River. For Le Due Rose, the Nebbiolo grapes are harvested slightly earlier than usual, helping preserve natural acidity, freshness and aromatic fragrance. The 2019 shows an attractive pale cherry-red colour, with a fragrant bouquet of red apple, ripe cherry, wild strawberries, rose petals and delicate citrus notes. On the palate it is dry, fresh and distinctly savoury, combining juicy red-fruit flavours with lively acidity and a characteristic saline, mineral finish.

The wine is made with a short maceration on the skins of around 24 hours, just long enough to extract its delicate colour and fresh fruit character. It then completes its fermentation and maturation in stainless-steel tanks on fine lees, without oak, preserving the natural freshness and mineral character of the wine. The result is a particularly versatile and gastronomic rosato: refreshing enough for an aperitif, yet with enough body and savoury structure to accompany food. The 2019 works beautifully with seafood, fish, antipasti, light pasta dishes, white meats and summer salads, while its Nebbiolo character makes it especially interesting with more substantial dishes than one might normally associate with rosé.
