Filippo Gallino Roero Riserva SORANO 2015 is a powerful and distinctive expression of Nebbiolo from Roero, produced in the commune of Canale from 100% Nebbiolo grown on light-coloured calcareous-clay soils with layers of sand. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a relatively long 15–20 day maceration, followed by 24 months of maturation in a combination of barriques and larger oak barrels, before further refinement in bottle.
The 2015 offers an opulent and complex bouquet of ripe red fruit, cherry and blackberry, layered with violet, dried rose, liquorice, dark spices, cocoa, vanilla and balsamic notes. With bottle age, more savoury nuances emerge, including tobacco, resin, earth and incense, giving the wine a distinctly mature Nebbiolo character. On the palate it is dry, full-bodied and firmly structured, with pronounced but well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity and a subtle savoury minerality. The combination of ripe fruit, spice and tannic grip gives it considerable depth and persistence.
A serious, age-worthy Roero Riserva with the structure and aromatic profile of a classic Piedmontese Nebbiolo, SORANO is richer and more powerful than many lighter Roero interpretations, yet retains the floral and savoury character associated with the variety. At around a decade old, the 2015 should now be entering an attractive stage of maturity, with further development towards dried flowers, leather, tobacco, spice and earthy tertiary complexity. It is particularly suited to Piedmontese pasta, braised and roasted red meats, game and mature cheeses.
