Filippo Gallino Grappa di Barbera Barrique

Filippo Gallino Grappa di Barbera Barrique is a premium, wood-aged Piedmontese grappa, produced by the historic family-owned Azienda Agricola Filippo Gallino in Canale, in the heart of the Roero region of Piedmont. Rather than being a young, crystal-clear grappa, this is a more refined and contemplative style, with the spirit spending one year in French oak barriques before bottling. The result is a beautifully rounded digestif in which the character of Piedmontese Barbera meets the vanilla, spice and gentle toasted notes of oak.

The grappa is produced from 100% Barbera grape pomace, the skins and other solid remains left after pressing the grapes for wine. The Barbera comes from Gallino's vineyards around Canale, where the characteristic sandy and clay-rich soils of the Roero provide the grapes with their distinctive fruit and acidity. The fresh pomace is traditionally distilled using a Piedmontese bain-marie copper still (alambicco a bagnomaria), a gentle indirect-heating method that allows the delicate aromatic compounds of the grape to be retained rather than being overwhelmed by the heat of distillation.

After distillation, the spirit is matured for one year in French oak barriques, giving the grappa its attractive golden colour and considerably greater depth and softness than a young grappa. At 40% ABV, it is dry, warm and complex, with the naturally intense character of Barbera developing into a harmonious combination of ripe dark fruit, vanilla, gentle spice and elegant oak. The barrel ageing tempers the alcoholic warmth and adds structure without masking the underlying grape character. This makes it particularly enjoyable as a slow-sipping digestif, either on its own or alongside dark chocolate, roasted nuts or a selection of mature cheeses.
