Tasting Notes

Domaine Leccia Patrimonio Rouge 2020 is a distinctive Corsican red from the historic Patrimonio appellation, made from 100% Niellucciu, the island’s indigenous red grape closely related to Sangiovese. The organically farmed vines are around 25 years old and grow on clay-limestone soils over a schistous base, giving the wine a combination of Mediterranean warmth, freshness and mineral character.

The wine displays a fine, precise nose of red and black berries, with expressive notes of cassis, blackberry and red cherry, complemented by hints of cocoa, liquorice, leather and Mediterranean spice. On the palate, it is supple yet structured, with bright fruit, lively acidity and remarkably fine, well-integrated tannins. The absence of oak allows the Niellucciu and Patrimonio terroir to remain at the forefront, resulting in a wine that is elegant, savoury and unusually fresh rather than rustic or heavy.

The grapes are hand-harvested, completely destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, followed by approximately 15 days of maceration and 18 months of ageing in stainless steel. This restrained élevage preserves the wine’s purity and freshness while allowing its tannic structure to soften. With an estimated 10 years of ageing potential, the 2020 is already entering an attractive drinking window, but should develop further savoury and tertiary complexity over the coming years.
