95 Points Decanter – Four International Wine Ratings! Prestigious Single-Cru Barbaresco, Now Entering Its Peak Drinking Window!

Carlo Giacosa – Barbaresco ASILI 2018

Carlo Giacosa Barbaresco ASILI 2018 is an exceptionally elegant, refined and age-worthy expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco's most prestigious vineyards. Unlike the estate's NARIN Barbaresco, which combines grapes from several vineyard sites, ASILI is produced exclusively from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the celebrated Asili cru, renowned for producing some of the most perfumed, sophisticated and long-lived wines of Piedmont. The vineyard's favourable exposure and calcareous soils contribute to the remarkable elegance and complexity of this single-vineyard wine.

The 2018 displays an elegant, translucent ruby-red colour with developing garnet reflections and a wonderfully complex bouquet of wild strawberries, ripe cherries, raspberries, Parma violets and dried rose petals, complemented by subtle notes of liquorice, rhubarb, balsamic herbs, earthy spice and cedar. On the palate, it is dry, refined and beautifully structured, combining delicate red-fruit flavours with vibrant acidity, finely textured tannins and a distinctive savoury, mineral character. Its long, persistent finish reveals the remarkable finesse for which Asili is celebrated.

Outstanding international recognition – four professional ratings for the 2018 vintage:

  • 95 points – Decanter

  • 91 points – James Suckling

  • 91 points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

  • 90 points – Wine & Spirits

Decanter particularly praised its savoury complexity, floral character, velvety texture and vibrant acidity. James Suckling highlighted its earthy aromatics, ripe fruit and structured finish, while Wine Advocate emphasised the elegance and accessibility of this exceptional vineyard site. With a production of only approximately 1,904 bottles, this is a genuinely special, limited-production Barbaresco.

Now entering its peak drinking window! At eight years old in 2026, this beautifully structured Barbaresco is reaching an exciting stage of maturity. Its youthful red-fruit character is beginning to evolve towards the sophisticated tertiary aromas that make mature Nebbiolo so compelling: dried roses, forest floor, tobacco, leather, liquorice and balsamic spice. The tannins should be becoming increasingly integrated, while the wine's lively acidity preserves freshness and elegance.

ASILI 2018 offers the best of both worlds: the complexity of a maturing Barbaresco and the vitality of a wine with further ageing potential. For well-stored bottles, 2026–2034 represents an attractive estimated drinking window, with the possibility of further development beyond that. An outstanding choice for a special dinner, particularly with white truffles, porcini risotto, roast duck, lamb, braised beef, game and mature Piedmontese cheeses.
